Kudos to the advances in medical and laser technology, acne scars can be treated with increasing success. Over time, they can diminish in appearance. There is no magic, only pure science. And yes, TIME is needed to improve the scars.

It is necessary to differentiate the 2D acne scars from the 3D ones since each category progresses and recovers differently. This knowledge will help you to manage your expectations of the speed, cost, pain and downtime before embarking on your ‘Scar Wars’!

2D scars are flat on the skin surface and usually appear as brown, black, red or maroon colour tones. These are easily treated with creams containing glycolic acids, retinoic acids, and even lightening ingredients such as kojic acid. Topical application takes time (about 3 to 6 months) to erase these acne marks. If you leave it alone for 6 months, it can potentially disappear without doing anything. What if you want it gone sooner? Skin lasers are just what you need. They can help to reduce these marks in a few sessions, usually within 1 to 3 months. These are affordable with minimal pain and downtime.

The 3D scars are the ones you probably dislike the most. They are the notorious acne scars that reflect clearly under that evil lighting – depressed and “hole-ly”. These 3D scars have been known to be difficult to treat. We wish for a solution that will erase away our past scars completely and immediately. The “completely” is achievable to a good extent. The “immediately” is not yet a full dream-come-true, though the duration is shortened to about 6 months. The reality is that it can be treated, just not in one session. 

The duration of treatment depends on the type of laser machines used, and it is directly proportional to the downtime that you can bear. A reasonable estimate is 6 months of laser treatments with a pain factor that ranges from 3 to 8 out of a total score of 10 (score of 10 being the most painful), and downtime of 1 to 5 days.
